Garbage/Recycling Schedule

Standard Refuse

Kitchen garbage and light trash is picked up in the rear of the house twice each week. Curbside trash and bagged debris should be put out after 6:00pm preceding the pickup day. If refuse containers are used, they must be removed from curbside within 12 hours after pickup.

South Zone (Lincoln Street, Clark Street and South)

Details regarding recyclable items

Garden & Yard Debris
  • Picked up at the curb on your FIRST scheduled collection day (Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday).
  • It must be either bagged in biodegradable paper bags or tied in bundles.
  • Plastic bags will not be collected.
  • Loose brush and large tree limbs will not be collected. They must be cut into 30-inch lengths and securely bundled or placed in an open garbage container.
  • Heavy trash, garden or yard debris in bags exceeding 45 lbs will not be collected.
Bulk Waste
  • Borough wide pickup on the First Thursday of every month
  • Due to early collection hours, residents are advised to put bulk waste out after 6:00 pm the Wednesday evening before pickup.
  • Bulk material collection will not accept plastic bags, cardboard boxes, paper bags or electronics.
  • No concrete, brick, pavers, block or asphalt will be accepted, these items must be recycled at a class B recycling facility.
  • No tires will be accepted.
  • No propane tanks will be accepted.
  • Mattresses and box springs will be accepted.
  • CARPET must be cut into four 4 ft. lengths, tied and bundled; weighing no more than 50 lbs.
  • Small debris from home renovations should be placed in small plastic containers not to exceed 40 pounds.
  • Containers should be placed at the curb after 6pm on Wednesday evening for collection on the first Thursday of every month.
  • Items with Freon such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers and televisions will be picked up by the Borough on Wednesday mornings by appointment only. Please call 973-748-8400 ext. 223 to schedule pick-up.

Paint & Household Hazardous Waste
  • Latex paint must have lids removed and set aside to dry out. Drying process can be accelerated by adding cat litter or speedy dry. Once dry, cans can be disposed of in household trash.
  • Oil based paints must be recycled at point of purchase or at Household Hazardous Waste Day along with chemicals and pesticides. Visit the Essex County Utilities Authority for dates and lists of acceptable/unacceptable items.
