Neighbor to Neighbor Network

Seniors: Need a helper?

Do you find yourself unable to do grocery shopping? Run errands? Handle small household repairs? Are you feeling isolated?

The Neighbor to Neighbor Network is a nonprofit organization that assists seniors and disabled Bloomfield and Glen Ridge residents with a registered network of volunteer service providers. Currently, NtNN is actively seeking seniors in need of help.

Neighborhood

Do your heart good; volunteer for NtNN.

The Neighbor to Neighbor Network is a volunteer corps that assists the homebound and disabled, seniors, families with limited income and homeless animals.

If you have a few hours a month to spare, NtNN could use your help for:

  • Weekly food pantry deliveries to residents.

  • Visits with isolated seniors and disabled adults.

  • Grocery shopping and errands for those who can't manage those tasks alone.

  • Maintenance projects such as building clean-up, lawn mowing and painting.

  • Filling out utility assistance applications.

  • Transporting people to medical and other appointments.

  • Assisting at the Bukowski Shelter for Animals.

In addition, volunteers are needed for NtNN public relations, volunteer recruitment, and fundraising.

To learn more, contact Paula Peikes, 973-680-4017 or ppeikes@bloomfieldtwpnj.com.

Glen Ridge's participation with the NtNN is the result of a shared service agreement with Bloomfield for social services which starts January 1, 2012.

Activities For Seniors

The Borough of Glen Ridge sponsors a number of useful, interesting and enjoyable activities for seniors. The Golden Circle, led by Juanita Nevola, meets at the Senior Center located at the Glen Ridge train station, 226 Ridgewood Avenue.

The Studio Seniors' Art Class meets every Tuesday from 10:00am - 12:30pm and is led by instructor Suzanne O'Connor. Suzanne, a Glen Ridge resident, has many years of experience with students of all ages.

Chair Yoga is a gentle form of the ancient exercise. It can be performed while standing or sitting and will tone up the whole body. Instructor Ellen Robertson leads classes for men and women in two sessions: one that meets every Monday at 9:45am for an hour, and another that meets twice monthly on Thursdays. Please see the Seniors Activities Calendar for all dates and times and call Ellen at 973-992-9899 to sign up.

A Ride to the Supermarket is available to those Glen Ridge seniors who need one every Friday at 10:00am when the Jitney departs for Brookdale Shop Rite. Please note that the Jitney will run on Wednesday, November 23 to facilitate Thanksgiving shopping.

The High School Luncheon is an opportunity for the Glen Ridge Board of Education to invite our seniors to lunch on the third Monday of each month. The luncheon provides an update on developments at Glen Ridge schools and takes place this month on Monday, November 14.

An Annual Luncheon and Lecture for Glen Ridge seniors is sponsored by the Mayor's Alliance Committee (MAC) and is organized by Lynn-Eve Berkowitz. This year's luncheon will be held on November 16 at 12:00 noon at Fitzgerald's Sidecar and will feature Doctor Juan Riestra, Mountainside Hospital's Director of Psychiatry. Space is limited, so please sign up by Monday, November 14.

The Golden Circle has a meeting each month on an important health topic and a monthly Golden Circle membership meeting which often features a guest speaker.

Any Glen Ridge senior interested in more information or wishing to sign up for any activity can call 973-748-2924.
