The 2011-2012 flu season will soon be here and The Glen Ridge Board of Health is providing you with the tools necessary to fight the flu germs.
Flu shots are the best way to avoid the flu; they not only protect you, but those around you. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that everyone ages 6 months and over receive an annual flu vaccine.
Vaccination of high risk people is especially important to decrease their risk of severe illness. Those at high risk for serious complications include young children, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes or heart and lung disease and people ages 65 and over.
In addition to vaccination, you can take the following everyday precautions to stop the spread of germs. Be sure to cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol based hand rub. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth; germs spread this way. If you are sick stay home, while sick limit contact with other as much as possible to keep from infecting them.
Proper Hand washing Technique:
- Wet with warm water and add soap, work into a lather
- Scrub for 20 seconds
- Rinse well
- Dry with a paper towel
- Use paper towel to turn off faucet (public area)
- Use paper towel to open door (public area)
